10 Tips to Successfully Pack for your Storage Unit.
Packing your belongings for storage can feel overwhelming, especially when you want to keep everything organized and protected. At U-Self Storage, we’ve helped thousands of customers make the most of their storage space and we’ve learned a few tricks along the way. Whether you’re storing items for a few months or several years, these ten practical tips will help you pack efficiently and keep your belongings safe.
1. Plan Before You Pack
Start by making a list of what you’ll be storing. Group items by size and fragility, and think about what you may need to access later. Planning ahead saves time when you move in and makes it easier to find things later.
2. Use the Right Boxes and Containers
Sturdy boxes are key. Choose uniform-sized boxes so they stack easily, and avoid overfilling them. For long-term storage, consider plastic bins with tight lids, they protect against moisture and pests better than cardboard.
3. Label Everything Clearly
Write on multiple sides of each box with a permanent marker. Be specific instead of “Kitchen,” write “Kitchen – Pots and Pans.” If you’re storing a lot, create a simple list on your phone or computer to track what’s in each box.
4. Protect Fragile Items
Wrap glass, ceramics, and electronics in bubble wrap or soft cloths. Use packing paper between dishes or plates, and fill empty spaces with foam or newspaper to prevent shifting. Always mark boxes containing fragile items.
5. Disassemble Large Furniture
If possible, take apart tables, bed frames, or shelving. This saves space and makes moving easier. Keep screws and small hardware in a labeled bag and tape it to the furniture piece it belongs to.
6. Use Furniture Covers and Blankets
Cover couches, mattresses, and upholstered items with protective covers or moving blankets to prevent dust and scratches. Avoid using plastic wrap on leather or fabric furniture, it can trap moisture and cause damage over time.
7. Stack Strategically
Place heavier boxes on the bottom and lighter, more fragile boxes on top. Create a central aisle in your unit so you can reach items in the back without moving everything. Keep frequently used items near the front for easy access.
8. Use Vertical Space
Maximize your unit by stacking boxes up to the ceiling, but make sure the heaviest ones are stable at the base. Consider adding freestanding shelves if you’ll need to access certain boxes regularly.
9. Keep Items Off the Floor
Use pallets or wooden boards to keep boxes off the concrete floor. This helps with airflow and protects your items from potential moisture or temperature changes, especially in long-term storage.
10. Leave Room for Air Circulation
A little space goes a long way. Don’t overpack your unit, leaving small gaps between stacks improves air circulation and prevents musty odors. Units at U-Self Storage provide extra protection.
